3.5 starsI absolutely loved the world created in Desires Unleashed. Supernaturals and Humans forced to share the earth as the revelations of their coexistence turn the world upside down makes for a very realistic and gritty setting. Vampires and shifters seem to obey the rules and be kept in check by the special law enforcement division created by humans, S.U.I.T, but nothing is as it seems. You’ll encounter a wide array of relationships, from suppressed feelings, to threesomes, to open relationships and pretty much love in every shape and form, just as it happens in the real world. There are many characters introduced, but they all come into their own, and the way everything is tied in together, in a seemingly unlikely and volatile group is absolutely brilliant.
Darian is by far my favorite in the whole book. He is the type of vampire I just can’t help loving: unapologetic, defiant, determined and arrogant. A bit like Anne Rice’s Lestat, yet a lot more careful with his endeavors. He definitely has a lot more fun while at it as well.
While I loved the characters, the action, the world, I had one problem with this book. The head hopping was mind boggling. The story is already told from several perspectives, and while I do love getting to know the points of view of several characters, jumping between a few perspectives in each scene breaks the flow of the story. While it was annoying, I still couldn’t put this book down and wanted to find out everything about the characters introduced.

Natasha Hemingway's life has always been ordinary. In truth, she prefers it that way, even thought she knows there's more out there than meets the eye. Ever since all things pertaining to supernaturals has come out of the closet, so to speak, she's done her best to stay away from them. In her eyes, that world doesn't really exist, so she's done her best to not think about it that much. Unfortunately, that's easier said than done.
Her best friend, Annette, works at Desires Unleashed, the hottest supernatural night club around run by a very sexy vampire. While Natasha has never met the guy, she still takes her friend's claims at face value, though she's promised herself that she'll steer clear of vampires, werewolves, and everything else that goes bump in the night. Granted, in this day and age, it's hard to know who's a supernatural, and who is not. Never-the-less, she'll give things all she's got in hopes of keeping that world at arm's length.
When the boundaries between the supernatural and the human world become blurred, Natasha does her best to ignore the situation at hand. Never mind that there's a killer out there doing away with supe's. No, that doesn't pertain to her, or so she thinks. An unexpected accident while on an outing with Annette one night soon has her questioning whether she can hold fast to her prior beliefs in regards to the supernatural world.
As her determination unravels, she begins to realize that she's tied to that world in more ways than one. Her unexpected dreams have allowed her to see things that haven't quite happened yet. How this has come about, she's not quite sure. Finding herself smack-dab in the middle of the fray, Natasha knows she'll need to put her new skills to the test. Her world, and those of her new friends, has been threatened. If they're to survive, she'll need to accept the fact that the supernatural world is here to stay. Torn between what is right and what right wrong, she soon realizes that she'll need to trust her instincts if she's to save everyone from the killer lurking in the shadows.
I think this is the first time I've ever really read a M-M erotic paranormal romance. Gotta admit the storyline was quite interesting. There's quite a few diverse characters in the story, that's for sure, each with their own unique story to tell. I think this is a nice beginning for this series. Well-crafted, I think D. N. has put a unique spin on all things supe's.
I have a feeling I will be putting off other books to read this series because after reading the first book, I am intrigued by the characters from Desires Unleashed. I need more of Darien and Xavier. I also need more of Matthew and Warren. I love the idea of this series and how D.N. Simmons introduced the characters in the first book.
D.N. Simmons did a superb job opening up the series with Desires Unleashed and how she captured my attention from the beginning of the book and kept that attention towards the very end. The only reason why I am leaving off a half of star is because I did get a little confused on certain areas of the book because it would continuously switch from different characters getting their limelight in the story.
I would go from being in Darien's head...from going to Natasha, to Xavier, and then to one of the Detectives. It took me a while to get used to, but once I got the hang of it...the book went quickly for me.
I loved some characters over others the minute they were first introduced. Darien, I was a little skeptical at first until Natasha stood up to him. (He has a dark side...but he also has a good side) Darien is one character that definitely grew on me.
Xander because he is just described as someone, who I typically would fall for in a male character. He got entranced by Natasha first and he entranced me first as a reader.
Warren intrigued me because he works for S.U.I.T and he is able to hide his secret. He also has his past problems that are coming back to haunt him.
Natasha is a character I want to know more of after learning about her abilities. She went up against a vampire and even got into several other sticky situations, but she was able to get out of them.
I definitely believe I will have to put off other books to read more about these paranormal creatures in the Knights of Darkness Chronicles. D.N. Simmons gave me a taste of what S.U.I.T does in this book (Matthew & Warren). She also just touch based on the shifters and vampires. I want more. I actually need more.
I give this book 4.5 moons and highly recommend it to paranormal romance and urban fantasy readers out there.
I look forward to reading the next installment real soon and so glad I do not have to wait for the next installment or the following ones after that. I would go crazy.
