"The second story on the ten o’clock news on Wednesday Student missing, police inquiring. The interview with the professor was followed by a quick hit with a grumpy detective in a wrinkled suit tossing out the inevitable quote that the first forty-eight hours are the most vital in a case. He didn’t mention the fact that twice that time had passed." One woman’s disappearance unlocks dark secrets in Mark Allen’s brisk new detective novel, Six Months of September. As the suspects pile up, it falls on one unemployed reporter to figure out what the police cannot. Duncan Walsh has recently been fired from his job at Channel 8 news after an intense altercation with a local news icon. While contemplating his next move, he spends his days at the Chicago Museum of Natural History where he quickly befriends a beautiful tour guide named Agnes. A local university student, Agnes reveals that she is soon heading off on a paleontology dig. But when Agnes never shows up for the assignment, her disappearance becomes headline news. Unable to sit back while Agnes’s life may be in danger, Duncan launches his own investigation with the assistance of his best friend. Along the way, another volunteer joins up, the last person Duncan ever wants to meet James, Agnes’s boyfriend. The ragtag group of amateur detectives struggles to gain leads, a task made all the harder by James’s father, the Chicago Police Commander who may just hold a secret of his own. The danger heats up and more secrets are revealed as their investigation brings them closer to the university where Agnes studied. When one of them is attacked by an unknown assailant, Duncan begins to suspect that they may have gotten themselves in over their heads. Readers will find Six Months of September a compulsively readable page turner, right down to the right down to the shocking final confrontation.

Six Months of September A Duncan Walsh Mystery Duncan Walsh Mysteries Book 1 edition by Mark Allen Kimberly Sullivan Barbara Lichtenwalter Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
Quaint little mystery featuring a down-on-his-luck unemployed reporter named Duncan Walsh. Duncan is hanging around the museum one day and the tour guide (Agnes) catches his eye. A brief conversation ensues, but poor Duncan can't get her out of his head. After Agnes disappears on the day she's supposed to be leaving for an archaeological dig, Duncan notices the police are shoving her case on the back burner, so he decides to conduct an investigation on his own. With the financial help of a good friend, he embarks on an exciting and interesting ride. The story starts off kind of slowly, and doesn't really pick up much steam until about the 25% mark, when he meets Agnes' boyfriend Jim, and the two reluctantly team up. As they both look deeper into Agnes' life, they discover there was more to the dedicated student than they knew. This book, once it got going, is a fun and entertaining read, and with a lead character that is quite likeable and realistic. Interesting situations, some nice twists, and a wide cast of characters make this book one that I'd have no problem recommending.Product details

Six Months of September A Duncan Walsh Mystery Duncan Walsh Mysteries Book 1 edition by Mark Allen Kimberly Sullivan Barbara Lichtenwalter Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I really enjoyed this story. The characters were great, and I found myself chuckling, especially at Walsh's quips. The only thing I thought was far-fetched was the police commander, in his own office, admitting to Walsh his sexual behavior with Agnes. The whole conversation seemed a little too much, with the commander becoming drunk while he spoke. Oh well, maybe I am naive.
I just found Mark Allen and just love his writing. I have read Six Months of September and loved it so I had to order the second Duncan Walsh, Small Village and it is as great as the first book. Mark Allen shows, humor, compassion and keeps you wanting to keep reading so you can find out what is happening. I would highly recommend this book, a very good read....
I enjoyed the format this story used. Duncan is portrayed as a quick thinking and sarcastic bloke but he has a lovable quality The predicament he finds himself in is his own fault but then explodes into a fast paced cat and mouse chase to the killer, body and an attempt to save the girl.
Snappy, quirky - and eminently readable fun. Mark Allen captures the local flavor of Chicago and lets the reader peek inside the City of Big Shoulders to see its personality up close and personal. There is a wry humor here that never quits - and never stops delighting the reader. Some books have a great story. Some have a great narrator. Six Months of September delivers both alongside an intriguing story about just what became of a beautiful young woman named Agnes, who rocks a pair of khakis and goes missing, right about the time down-on-his luck, would-be reporter Duncan Walsh (who arguably has way too much time on his hands) becomes obsessed with her. Looking forward to the next installment of the series.
Unemployed reporter Duncan Walsh who was sacked
from Channel 8 for hitting a commentor, spent his time
at the museum of natural history where he met a guide
called Agnes. He keeps going back to the museum to see
if he can meet up with her again but can not find her.
Agnes never went on a paleontology dig, so Duncan
decides to find her. A good, lighthearted read about
Duncan sets about finding her.
I'm not sure the first page of a book has ever made me laugh before. If so, I certainly never laughed three times before getting to page two. SMOS did make me laugh three times off the bat and- even better - continued to entertain me all the way through.
I love that Duncan is the smartass friend we all have that we often want to simultaneously punch and hug. I wanted to give him a high-five after some of his smart lines, clink frosty beer mugs with him a few times, and slap him upside the head on at least a couple of occasions.
I can't wait to see what he gets himself into next. Here's hoping this talented new author produces another equally good installment soon.
I like to read books in "chronological" order (according to character development). This was my first Duncan Walsh mystery and first book by Mark Allen.
My initial reaction was that it was a bit slow getting to the "meat" of things. It took awhile before the story started to flesh out. But, I persisted and was glad I did as it turned out to be a good read.
***Minor Spoiler Alert*** I liked the characters the shock of finding out where a character's morals, or lack thereof, led; a father's betrayal; an unlikeable detective morphing into likeable; a career change and other developments.
Without giving away any more than I have I can only say, all in all I enjoyed the story and will most likely read more in this series.
