It all began in June 2005 when Bobby Henderson wrote an open letter to the Kansas School Board proposing a third alternative to the teaching of evolution and intelligent design in schools.
Bobby is a prophet of sorts, the spiritual leader of a growing, world-wide group of followers who worship the teachings of The Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM).
The FSM appeared to Bobby as a giant ball of spaghetti, with meatballs for eyes, and touched Bobby with “His noodly appendage” – resulting in the revelation that the FSM is the real creator of the universe. The FSM faithful look to Bobby as their prophet and spiritual leader. Shortly after Bobby’s revelation a website (www.flyingspaghettimonster.org) came into existence to promote the word. Then came the articles, which were worldwide The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian (UK), Die Welt (Germany), Surprise (Austria), and many others chimed in to report the existence of the FSM. Bobby received letters of support from academics and Kansas School Board members alike – not to mention a couple million hits per day on the website – and it was all-too-clear that there needed to be a book to lay out FSM scripture, rites and observances, proofs, and answers to the Big Questions. This is that book.

If you're a recent convert to Pastafarianism or just interested in the core "beliefs", this is the definitive book on the subject. I purchased my copy shortly after becoming a minister of the Pastafarian faith. The hardcover version which I received has a handy cloth bookmark built in.As far as religious texts go, this is probably the most entertaining gospel I have ever read. The book clearly defines the religious practices and beliefs of the followers of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, along with contrasts to other currently popular religions. Many current debates that have our society separating church and state are discussed in clear and logical ways to bring the reader to the conclusion that the Flying Spaghetti Monster is a loving and caring deity who wants humans to be happy and live fulfilling lives.
Some things I learned from this book:
1. Gravity is actually the result of the FSM (Flying Spaghetti Monster)'s invisible noodly appendages lovingly holding everything down on Earth where we are safe.
2. Heaven awaits the faithful with beer volcanoes and a stripper factory.
3. Ramendon, Pastover, Holiday (a.k.a. December), and every Friday are religious holidays that should be celebrated by consuming carbs and intoxicating beverages.

This will bring joy to the heart of anyone opposed to teaching religion as science. It's a brilliant parody which actually stopped the Kansas State School Board in its tracks when they tried to mandate teaching "Creation Science" as an equivalent theory to Evolution.
OK, I'll have to admit - Bobby Henderson's open letter to the Topeka Kansas School Board, which proposed that his "Flying Spaghetti Monster" theory be taught on equal footing with the Theory of Evolution and Theory of Intelligent Design - was brilliant, witty and great fun; and was an extremely effective and innovative way to illustrate that science must be about facts, and that facts can be proven or disproven that science is not about one's beliefs over and above those facts.
In that vein, Mr. Henderson's book-length version of that open letter is filled with lots of fun and elaborate "theories" and arguments, designed to lampoon many of Intelligent Design's arguments by showing them up for the logical fallacies that they are. On the other hand, the approach he uses in the book gets a bit repetitive and long winded, to the point of being tedious. So, like other great satires of the past, such as the 1960's TV Series "Batman", or the more recent Shrek films, the joke gets old after a while.
I would say that Mr. Henderson's contention that Intelligent Design places a veneer of faith on top of flawed logic is both brilliant and humorously presented. The book length version of that satire, while providing a fair number of chuckles and deep thoughts to ponder over pasta, is best read in small doses.
Though I'd give 5 stars for the concept, the execution of it in this volume is only a 2 star effort. So let's be generous and - given that it does succeed in generating chuckles at a fairly consistent pace - I'll rate the book as 4 stars overall.

I was looking for an alternate "religion" where I can feel accepted and preach about love. Finding the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) was the best thing it happened to me. Not only I trust in the "Intelligent Design" but also I do believes that our ancestors, the Pirates, are our only option to salvation. Also its Heaven is so far better than any other. So if you are looking for a "All-Inclusive Religion" this one is the perfect for you.
Love this book - it is an inspiration to Pastafarians around the world! If you aren't happy with your current religion/atheism/agnosticism then consider becoming a Pastafarian- we love all, celebrate Pirates, and Friday is our observed holiday, with Talk Like a Pirate Day (Sept 19) being our High Holiday. Come, grab some grog, grab a wench (or a pirate) and celebrate His Noodliness!
Very good book, makes a lot of sense as well. Except there is one issue. You don't get the red book in the picture. you get a book with a picture of the red book on the cover. Didn't stop me from reading it
